We Love Growing Stuff!

We’re keen gardeners here at the Railway Inn, and love to cheer up the front of the pub with flowers and greenery. Nasturtiums are a favourite because they match our orange parasols, and we save the seeds each year from last year’s flowers, dry them and sow them the following year. We also use these lovely edible flowers to add a splash of colour to our salads and boards. Their peppery flavour is delicious. You’ll also spot gorgeous yellow sunflowers just starting to come into bloom which we also grow from last year’s saved seeds.

We have an allotment in the village where we grow vegetables which we use to prepare dishes at the pub. We grow whatever we can to put on your plates, and this year you may have sampled our broad beans, salad leaves, soft fruits, herbs and courgettes. There will soon be French beans and squashes, with cabbages, leeks and broccoli in the winter.

The Railway InnBook Club

Just a week to go before we meet up for this month’s Railway Inn Book Club.

You still have time to read Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano if you fancy it.

‘A luminously beautiful novel’ Observer
‘I very nearly missed my stop on the train. It was that good’ Elle
‘A novel of rare yet classic beauty’ i Paper
‘A moving, tender family epic’ Pandora Sykes

Do you agree? Come and share your thoughts at 8pm in the restaurant with a cold glass of something nice!

Vinyl Night at The Railway Inn

Last month we hosted our very first vinyl night at the pub. It was such a fun night, we thought we’d better do it again!

The tunes we heard were an eclectic selection to say the least, with music ranging from Elvis to Drum and Bass, 70s pop to Welsh choral music, so anything goes!

Here’s how it works:

We meet up in the lounge/dining area of the pub, you bring your favourite vinyl records, choose the track you’d like to share and lovely Jason brings the kit and spins the tunes.

We all get to appreciate your favourite tracks amplified through quality speakers!

Depending on how many turn up, you may get to choose several, so bring a few.

See you on 11th!

Supper in the Sunshine

Don’t forget it’s the Abergynolwyn Duck Race this Sunday – a day of village fun for all ages!🦆

As a post-Duck-Race treat, we will be serving a fabulous summery menu of our salads, charcuterie boards and ploughmans to enjoy with a drink in the evening sunshine!

There’s something for everyone – whether you love our charcuterie boards with a selection of cured meats, olives, salads, hummus and fruit, or you you’re more of a cheesy chooser there’s goat cheese and beetroot salad or our scrumptious vegcuterie boards with three different cheeses. If you prefer to stay away from animal products we have a delicious vegancuterie board with a gorgeous meat free selection too!

All our salads and slaws are home made to our own recipes, and some ingredients are grown on our Abergynolwyn allotment.

Here’s some of our salad selection, all served with freshly baked crusty bread & butter (gluten free rolls always available).

We will be serving our usual Sunday roast from 12-3pm and take-away drinks will be available all day. Bookings taken for for or more, or rock up, grab a table and order from the bar.

Happy Duck Racing!

Introducing Alpacalypse!

There’s a new IPA on offer here at The Railway we think you’ll love!

Introducing – Alpacalypse, from Salt Brewery. A modestly hazy and crisp Session IPA that’s enviably laid-back. At 4.3%, this IPA delivers subtle tropical flavours and citrus aromas, with a refreshing finish. And the glassware is crazy!

Using American hops to create a modern, hazy pale ale with a gentle bitterness, it offers a balanced, great-tasting and sessionable liquid that’s perfect for both established craft beer lovers and the IPA inquisitive. We think if you love lager it’s worth giving it a go too.

This glorious weather is perfect for checking it out so we’re opening earlier than usual for a Tuesday – at 3pm, just so you can sample it in the sunshine!

Book Club in the Railway Inn

On the last Wednesday of the month at 8pm we host an informal book club here at the Railway.

It’s a great evening where we get together over a drink and talk about the book we’ve all read and choose the next one.

It’s a nice opportunity to meet up with old and new friends.

We try and vary the genres. So far we’ve read ‘I See You’ by Clare Mackintosh, ‘The Flat Share’ by Beth O’Leary and this month, on Wednesday 30th April, we’ll be talking about Catherine Cooper’s ‘The Chalet’.

All welcome!

Sunday Lunch in Abergynolwyn

We’re in for a run of lovely weather and it looks like it’s starting today!

Here at the Railway we’ve been busy preparing for Sunday lunches. A great deal of work goes into bringing home made Sunday lunches to the table, not just chopping the veg!

Our slowly cooked meats are irresistibly succulent as they’ve been cooking on a low heat for the whole night before. We have to get up early to take them out of the oven so they are ready to carve when you arrive. The red cabbage is braised in a slow cooker with cinnamon, garlic, apples and onion until it reaches a mouthwatering flavour, and the root vegetables are carefully cut to roast until perfectly tender.

Our gravy is made from the individual meat juices and the vegetable stock saved from the swede and carrot mash (which takes a lot of mashing!) and always thickened with gluten free flour, and the greens are always freshly steamed for each order.

The nut roast and stuffing is hand made with nuts and seeds and a handful of apricots or dates and we always make a vegan one too with chickpea water to bind it. The lamb and mint casserole on today’s menu features freshly picked mint from our allotment this morning!

Lunch is served from 12 until 3pm with bookings taken for tables of four or more people at 12 or 2pm, but you can walk in any time, grab a table and a menu and order from the bar when ready.

Abergynolwyn Duck Race

The annual Abergynolwyn duck race is a fun family community event which takes place in the village park and the river running beside it. This year it takes place on Sunday 4th May at 12pm. Ducks will be available to race on the day if you haven’t already bought one.

Expect games, stalls, cakes and wet fun!

The Railway Inn will be open all day with take away drinks available in plastic glasses and Sunday lunches served 12-3pm.
